Sources suggest that insurance premiums for female drivers in the UK may rise by as much as 24%, as of December 21. Why December 21? Well, it is the day when the EU Gender Directive becomes active. It means that all types of insurance will no longer find relevance in the person’s gender, which means that women, who have historically paid less for their car insurance, will now have to pay as much as 24% more than they used to.
According to Confused.com, the average increase for women in the UK is around £299, and women below the age of 25 will now pay £1,546 per year - now they pay around £1,247 on average (November 2012 figure). However, while the average increase may stand under the £300 mark, but some age groups will have to pay more.

For instance, women between the age of 17 and 25, who now pay £2,599 per year on average on car insurance, will be forced to pay £500 or more over that. The EU Gender Directive also affects life insurance, pensions, private medical insurance, income protection and annuities.
