UK Driver Smacks BMW 7 Series into Pole While Doing U-Turn

"This car is way too big for British roads," is something you hear a lot in reviews. It's a big problem, as the compact cars of today were executives not long ago, but parking sports and junctions haven't been enlarged at the same rate.

Still, the BMW 7 Series is and has always been pretty big. Today, we are dealing with the pre-facelift version of the current model, probably with the M Sport package and a long wheelbase by the look of things. The pre-facelift model is the one without the oversized grille, in case you're wondering how to tell them apart.

The helmet-cam of a motorcyclist captured the moment when this expensive German flagship sedan smacks its rear bumper against a light pole as it tries to do a U-turn. Probably feeling very embarrassed, the person behind the wheel quickly drives off.

The smart thing to do here would be to execute the turn where there are no poles or pull into a driveway slightly to make it easier. But knowing its customers might have problems due to the excessive size of the sedan, they offered a variety of convenience features.

Unless we're mistaken, all-round parking sensors would be standard here. It's nothing special, as even cheap cars like an Opel Astra could prevent this fender-bender. Of course, the BMW is no normal car, as the long wheelbase model is over 5.2 meters and usually weighs over 2 tons.

On top of that, you can have the Rear Collision Prevention system to stop the car if you're about to smack into things or people. Still not enough? The 7 Series is one of those cars that can park for you. In fact, you could probably make the turn from outside the car using the Display Key. Maybe that way the driver would notice the pole.
