UK Democrats Want to Ban Petrol, Diesel Cars by 2040

How about if petrol and diesel-powered vehicles would be banned from British roads in the future? Pretty funny, eh? Well, believe it or not, UK's Liberal Democrats have unveiled a proposal to only allow "electric vehicles and ultra-efficient hybrid cars" on UK roads by 2040, the Telegraph reports.

“By 2040, only ultra-low carbon vehicles will be permitted on UK roads for non-freight purposes,” the policy document states according to our source, who adds that the Democrats also want to introduce a system of road pricing in congested areas and replace current air passenger tax with a "per-plane duty, charged in proportion to the carbon emissions created by that journey".

No need for you British folks to panic yet, as the plan is a long way from becoming a law, but the proposal will be voted by party members at an upcoming conference in Glasgow, Scotland. If approved, the proposal could become party policy.

On the other hand, Nick Clegg's party says that shale gas exploration should be allowed as long as "regulations controlling pollution and protecting local environmental quality are strictly enforced".
