Uber Settles Lawsuit over Faux Airport Fee Toll, Agrees to Pay $1.8 Million

Uber is growing at an incredible pace, but that doesn’t mean that it’s always fair about its services. This recent settlement stands as proof that not everything it tells its customers is actually true. For instance, the San Francisco giant asked its users to pay a nominal airport fee that was never actually going anywhere else than in its own bank accounts.

Uber is known to be involved in a series of lawsuits in which the transportation company is accused of being outside the law, unsafe, and trying to mislead competition, just to name a couple of the charges brought against them. Ever since it started its harsh expansion outside the U.S., many countries have questioned whether or not they should allow the taxi-like service to exist along with the regular cab companies.

So far, Uber rarely made any concessions, which is one of the reasons this news comes as a surprise. According to Ars Technica, the ride-sharing company will reimburse $1.8 million in fees it collected in 2013 and 2014, under a settlement reached on Friday.

It turns out the company was involved in a class-action lawsuit over the “airport fee tolls,” which ranged from $1.25 to $4.50 per trip for journeys to various California airports, including San Francisco International and Los Angeles International. Around 350,000 Uber users have been charged these fees; it’s no wonder the company went for a deal, considering it needs no fuss that may affect its image.

Uber may have solved this case, but this was not the only ongoing suit of the type. As a matter of fact, a separate case brought by district attorneys in San Francisco and Los Angeles is calling the same charge a fraud that Uber pulled off to lead riders into believing that they were paying a regular airport tax.

The rather peculiar aspect of this mess is that Uber is not the only company that offers such services to be accused of the weird tax. According to the source, Lyft was also accused of something similar, yet it settled for $500,000.
