When Patricia Arquette made her speech after receiving an Oscar Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the mother in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, things got quite an interesting detour. “We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights, it’s our time to have wage equality once and for all,” she said.
Her plea to address the wage disparity between female and male workers received a huge ovation from iconic actresses such as Meryl Streep and other Hollywood royalty on that Sunday. It appears there truly is quite a big gap in wages in the entertainment industry, a thing almost never publicly discussed before.

Yes, but how is that connected to Uber, you might ask. Well, it might not be directly, but it sounds like that, since the giant transport company has just announced they have partnered up with UN Women with the goal “of accelerating economic opportunity for women.” Wait, what?

So let’s see if we got it right. First they barge in everywhere, causing some major controversies in some cities on the planet where they even got suspended. Then, they start opening up all these secondary services such as delivering food or even helping stray cats to be adopted. Heck, they even want to build up a Google Street View-like service they claim it would improve its service’s safety.

Now, Uber claims one million women will be hired in the next five years, as drivers on the company’s platform. “We intend to invest in long-term programs in local communities where we live and work, as Uber commits to creating 1,000,000 jobs for women globally on the Uber platform by 2020” the shared message of Phumzile Miambo-Ngcuka - executive director at UN Women - and Travis Kalanick - CEO at Uber - sounds like.

What’s next Uber, a trip to Mars maybe?

Editor's note: Uber also made a short clip with a couple of interviews with successful female Uber drivers around the planet, just to hint at how great their product is. We'll leave you be the judge of that.
