Some of you might not have heard of a carmaker called SsangYong. The South Korea-based brand didn't fare too well in terms of sales figures and equity in recent years, chiefly because models such as the Rexton and Rodius looked like the designer penned them while trippin' on magic mushrooms.
But starting with the updated Korando compact SUV, SsangYong started to design its vehicles properly. Updated nameplates aside, the brand is slowly but steadily making a name for itself once again thanks to greater attention to development, but the greatest offensive comes in the form of a future model dubbed as the X100, a B-segment crossover that has a bit of Nissan Cube to its profile look.
At the present moment we know that the X100 is borrowing styling cues from the XLV Concept and will rival models such as the Nissan Juke, future Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008. Unfortunately, it's anyone's guess what the powertrain will boast with, but we have a sneaking suspicion that SsangYong developed a new platform for the X100, which will adopt both gasoline and diesel-fed four-cylinder mills mated to either a six-speed manual or a smooth CVT gearbox.
More recently, SsangYong announced that it will bring two new concepts to the Paris Motor Show in October, named XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure. In the company's own words, "the XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure are near production ready concepts of the soon to be launched X100." And we're happy to report that the manufacturer offered four teaser pics of the concepts and both sport cool, modern looks.
SsangYong explains that XIV stands for "eXciting user-Interface Vehicle." Both the XIV-Air and XIV-Adventure are sporting what we expected to find under the X100's bonnet: either a 1.6-liter petrol or 1.6-liter diesel engine. Both powerplants are Euro 6 compliant. Measuring 4,195 mm in length and with a 2,600 mm wheelbase, these two concepts preview the production-spec X100.
