You can’t wonder how things are changing and how much faster kids these days seem to be growing up without sounding dinosaur-old, but this is one of those times when it’s called for. A 12- and a 7-year-old took one of their parent’s cars for a drive from New York City to Delaware.
We’ve all done dumb things growing up, but this is both dumb and awesome at the same time. The kids didn’t just steal their parents’ car, a Range Rover, but were able to drive it from Queens, New York, to the New Jersey-Delaware border. That’s more than 100 miles (161 km) with a 12-year-old at the wheel and absolutely no incident to report.
The New York Daily News reports that the kids (cousins, by all accounts) took the car from the parents’ driveway at about 9 in the morning. By mid-afternoon, they were already in police custody – and back home safely by dinner.
The parents reported them missing at 10 in the morning, after seeing them get into the car on footage recorded by their doorbell camera. Police accompanied them from a distance for most of the way and repeatedly tried to summon them to pull over. When the young driver refused to comply, they left them alone for fear of causing an accident.
Police were able to catch the boys when they stopped at a rest stop and tried to buy cookies with a parent’s credit card. As noted above, the extended joyride, as unbelievable as it may sound, caused no accident and no injury.
Police sources say that it could be that the boys were doing an online challenge; namely, the one started last year by Daily Driven Exotics’ founder Damon Fryer, when he bet Tavarish his Fast & Furious Lamborghini would beat Tavarish’s 2020 Toyota Supra in terms of fuel efficiency. The challenge consists of driving a car until it runs out of gas.
Neighbors tell the media no one ever saw the 12-year-old kid drive before.
