Two Guys Base Jumped INTO a Plane and This Is How They Did It

While we wait for the first human to first set a foot on Mars, there are very few first things left for one to do that will make them feel as though nobody will be able to match anytime soon. Base jumping into a moving flying plane ticks that box with a very broad line.
For most people, the very idea of base jumping is enough to make them feel queasy. It takes sky diving, which is not a sport for everyone to begin with, and makes it more difficult and dangerous by removing the air around the plane and replacing it with solid objects such as mountain cliffs, tall buildings or bridges.

And then there are those flying squirrel suits. Those may very well be the world's greatest invention because it's the closest we'll ever get to experience what it's like to fly bird-style, but they also scare the heck out of me. Have you seen the things people do with them? Flying a few feet away from a rocky mountainside is not everyone's idea of fun.

Enter Fred Fugen and Vince Reffet (aka the Soul Flyers), two guys who are probably bored by everything I've described so far and were looking for a new challenge. Exactly how they came up with this idea is anyone's guess, but the truly remarkable thing is that they went through with it.

OK, so back in 2017, the plan was for Fred and Vince to jump off a cliff in the Swiss Alps, catch up with a doorless plane that flew by and get inside in mid-air at roughly 150 km/h (about 94 mph). What could go wrong, right? Well, to make a long story short, everything.

That's why the team took its time and went about it the safe and methodical way. You know, as safe as anything that has to do with being so close to a flying plane can be. Preparations took months, but all great things require a bit of time and dedication. In the end, though, these people achieved something truly spectacular that's just as exciting today as it was nearly three years ago. I invite you to give this "how did they do it" video a try. Don't worry, even though it's in French (subtitles available), it's not in the least boring.
