Mercedes-AMG cars are known for the sound they make just as much as their performance figures, if not more. Even back when they couldn't really stand up against a BMW M, they would always win the sound battle.
These days, though, they're not all talk anymore. Recent models have made significant improvements in the handling department, meaning they will give any competitor a run for their money while their acoustics have remained just as impressive.

As you already know, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been replaced by the AMG GT about two years ago, but the gullwing-doored car is still regarded as one of the most beautiful modern Mercedes-Benz models, and given its exclusivity, it's still a head-turner.

The Audi R8, on the other hand, is a lot less of a show stopper. Despite having respectable specs, the R8 never really managed to convince people to give it the "supercar" staple. That was probably due to Audi's lack of tradition in this field, and the Ingolstadt brand failed to truly develop the car further. It received a facelift in 2012 and a second generation last year, but it just feels too similar to the original one.

Both of the cars here have had their standard exhaust systems removed and a replaced with a custom one made by Slovenian specialist Akrapovic. The first-gen Audi R8 is definitely the one that has benefited the most from this modification, since the AMG was pretty rouchy in factory condition as well.

The SLS AMG gets a 6.2-liter V8 engine with anything between 571 and 631 hp, depending on the version. The Audi R8 has had many versions over the years, but this one appears to be a standard early-version equipped with the 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine good for 420 hp.

The two cars produce quite different sounds, and at the end of the day it's all a matter of taste. We love cackles, so it's a clear win for the SLS AMG, but the R8 puts on a good fight. Strap your headphones on and enjoy every second of it.
