Twitter-Connected Chevrolets to Travel to SXSW

General Motors once again brings the OnStar technology in the spotlights, as the company has just announced that Chevrolet vehicles equipped with the system will post messages on Twitter as they travel to South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin during the course of this week. Blogger drivers will thus post new messages on specially-created Twitter accounts to keep followers up to date with the trip.

A total of ten teams of four bloggers will compete as city representatives in the challenge, and each team will be handed an OnStar Directions and Connections service, a mobile phone with OnStar mobile apps and Autonet Wi-Fi units for passengers.

“We are excited to make a number of our advanced OnStar social media interaction technologies exclusively available to our road-trip bloggers and get their first-hand feedback,” said Nick Pudar, vice president of business development and planning, OnStar.

“While it will be fun to see the cars join the conversation, the tweeting car demonstrates the potential we see for software that uses social media tools to create intelligent, customized mobility services that interpret drivers’ intent and help them to access highly relevant and personalized information in the vehicle.”

Last but not least, General Motors sees the campaign as a way to allow bloggers to review services such as Voice Communication App and Audio Facebook Updates. Most of these social networking tools allow bloggers to send and receive text messages, Facebook updates and Twitter messages using a voice recognition system while remaining focus on the road ahead.
