Today’s the big day of the Z06's premiere. In anticipation of the flat-plane crankshaft V8-engined model, a twin-turbo Stingray has dipped into the eight-second range on the quarter mile with the help of many upgrades.
As the headline implies, FuelTech boss Anderson Dick crossed the finish line in 8.973 seconds at 160.9 miles per hour (258.9 kilometers per hour). The record-breaking run took place at night at the Orland Speed World Dragway, a venue that features an elevation of 55.8 feet. As a rule of thumb, there’s more oxygen in the air we breathe at sea level than at high altitudes, and more oxygen translates to better performance for the small-block mill.
Originally rated at 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet (637 Nm) of torque, the direct-injected mill flexes 1,350 wheel horsepower due to Garrett G35-900 turbochargers mounted topside. FuelTech developed a workaround to avoid the factory-programmed torque management in the guise of a second ECU that governs the drivetrain settings to maximize acceleration. The fortified engine also flaunts forged pistons, Wiseco BoostLine connecting rods, Turbosmart electronic wastegates, and a custom-fabricated intake manifold that houses a set of injectors that spray methanol in the intake.
Nitrous Outlet provides extra air to the engine through chemical enhancement, and the reason this ‘Vette accelerates to the 60-foot mark in 1.413 seconds can be attributed to the instant hit of laughing gas off the starting line. FuelTech employs two WB-O2 Nanometers that monitor the air/fuel ratio through Bosch LSU 4.2 sensors in the exhaust system. Two FuelTech EGT-4 kits monitor the cylinder exhaust gas temperature individually to make sure the engine is capable of taking so much abuse.
As expected, Anderson Dick and his crew have also upgraded the dual-clutch transmission with Stage 2 clutches from Dodson Motorsport, which utilize nine and ten frictions in comparison to the factory setup that boasts five and six frictions. Weld Laguna double-spoke wheels and Mickey Thompson ET Street R drag radials pretty much sum up this amazing car.
