TV chef James Martin, star of BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, might not be a familiar name to TV audiences outside the UK, but he’s well known to car aficionados.
That’s because of his impressive car collection, which includes both newer, modern and expensive models, and rare classics like the 1948 Maserati A6GCS, 15 of which were only ever made.
That said, Martin would rather add to his car collection that have kids. Though he’s in a relationship and he says he’s happier than ever in his life, he believes his money is best spent on maintenance of current items or future investments for the collection, than on raising actual human beings made of flesh and bones.
Asked in a recent interview if he’s thinking of having kids (he’s 46, by the way), he simply responded with “No.”
“I go round to my mate's house, who has four kids, and realize that I don't want them after about two minutes,” he says, as cited by the Daily Mail. “Kids are great, but it's just no, not for me. You sacrifice so much in this work and the job and everything else. Never, no.”
Can you blame the guy? He says his cars are his “babies” and he’s focusing all his energy on them. Being the envy of his mates doesn’t hurt, we imagine. Or, as he puts it: “My mates come round and they look into my garage and I go, ‘These are my babies, these are my things,’ but you know, it's each to their own, isn't it?”
Besides the 1948 Maserati, Martin’s collection also includes a vintage Chevrolet Corvette, a Lotus 340R, two Ferrari Daytonas and a 275, several Mini Coopers, three F1 cars, a Ford Prefect and a Shelby Mustang.
Most of these were painstakingly restored under Martin’s direct supervision, so you can’t fault the guy for lying when he says he really takes good care of his “babies.”
