If you ever find yourself in a situation in which you need to use your windshield wipers but they’re not working and you can’t fix them right away, for whatever reason, here’s a possible fix.
A video filmed by another motorist in Istanbul, Turkey and posted to social media has gone viral, prompting cheers and laughter all over the world. You can also see it at the bottom of the page, courtesy of the Daily Mail.

Here is a driver / car owner who, though extremely embarrassed, is a genius in his own terms. He’s driving on a public road and it’s raining outside, so because his wipers aren’t working anymore, he actually had someone in the backseat operate them manually.

For this to work, he only needed some rags he tied together and then to the wipers. The passenger, a woman, is holding them and moving the wipers through the open front windows. The sight is hilarious, sad and yet pretty inspiring at the same time.

In case you’re wondering, yes, the car is old and Turkey-made, which could explain the malfunction. It’s a Tofas Sahin, a local version of the Fiat 131, and fixing its wipers is probably more money than the owner would like to pay, hence his “hack.” That would also explain why he’s so embarrassed when he realizes the other motorist is filming him because of it.

However, let’s not make fun of the poor dude but instead celebrate his ingenuity. As they say, when life throws you lemons, you make lemonade. Or, when you have to drive a broken-down Tofas Sahin, you make the most of it with rags and whatever else you can get your hands on.

There’s also this aspect to consider: “manually operated” windshield wipers are still better and safer than no wipers at all, especially in bad weather.
