Pikes Peak’s Open Division is, as the name suggests, open to just about anything. Including heavy duty trucks. And if driving suck a fast vehicle on Colorado’s dangerous course requires a lot of guts, then it’s safe to assume Mike Ryan had tons of it when he decided to take on Pikes Peak in a turbocharged truck.
Powered by a “super-turbo” 14-liter six-cylinder Detroit Diesel 60 series engine with two injection systems using a 50/50 mixture of water and methanol, the Freightliner-bodied contraption will make this year’s “Race to the Clouds” a lot more interesting.

Final horsepower figures have yet to be revealed, but Gale Banks Engineering claims that the “addition of the Double-Shot and Triple-Shot water-meth systems and the Double-Shot Auto-Chiller will increase engine output by about 400 HP.” One thing’s sure, the engine need a lot of power because the truck weighs five tons despite the body being made out of fiberglass and carbon fiber.

The 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will take place on June 30.
