It’s not the most extreme sportscar on the market, but the FA20 platform made by Toyota and Subaru is definitely the best one to go as a beginner. It’s cheap, has the classic front-engine x rear-wheel-drive configuration, decent power and a lot of tail happiness.
Consider the Toyota GT 86 / Subaru BRZ a blank canvas the automakers are offering to beginner racers or drifters. You get one, take it to the track in standard form, have fun, gain experience and then start adding more performance to it.

TJ Hunt is such a lad owning a tricked-out BRZ and Matt Farah went to try out his ride down the Snake in one chilly morning. And as you’ll see in the video, he was quite happy with the setup.

This particular BRZ rides on new coilovers and stickier tires, turning the car from tail happy to more asphalt gripping. However, wet patches are still a threat in the canyon mornings, so Matt had to take it easy.

You should also know the car runs on E85 ethanol blend, which apparently makes the car feel more powerful. A Fiesta ST would still beat it on a straight line, but it feels more confident in the mid-rpm range. Bet a supercharger will solve the problem...
