It's no secret that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class was never intended for showrooms, with the Gelandewagen having been conceived as a military vehicle. However, the G Wagon was never trully redefined until AMG started working on it.
Of course, given the said roots of the offroader, Affalterbach could only do so much for the machine, especially since we're not talking about the all-new, second-gen model that is currently on sale, which maintains the spirit of the original, but delivers it in a much more modern envelope.
However, none of the above will stop drag racing aficioandos from grabbing a G63, tuning it and throwing it at other machines. You know, just to stay off the beaten path.
Case in point with the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG in the piece of footage at the bottom of the page, which recently duked it out with a BMW X5 M.
We've seen tons of clips recorded during those hot nights of street racing that see the pack having its way with the highway. However, this one is different, since it involves super-SUVs.
Note that both machines had been modded - while the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 animating the G Wagen has been gifted with custom downpipes and a tune... we can say the same about the also-TT 4.4-liter V8 powering the Bavarian tool (this is an F85).
Make sure to use the swipe feature of the post below to see the two races that saw the beasts duking it out - the first is a rolling battle that kicks off at around 20 mph, while the other features a standing start (the driver of the X5 M claims the G63 was offered a one-car head start, but things don't seem quite so in the video).
PS: Notice that G-Class chassis twitching under all the muscle - wouldn't it feel safer to experience such sensations at the drag strip?
