Introduced to great commercial success in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair, based on the first-gen US-spec Ford Falcon and hoisted on the roof of the Empire State Building in 1965, the Mustang is an automotive legend. Remember how Ford celebrated the model’s 50th anniversary for most of 2014?
Apparently, the party hasn’t stopped yet. A new vid titled “Ford Mustang celebrates 50 years of fun” is now online on Ford Racing’s YouTube channel, but something is off if you focus on a simple detail: all eight retro and newer Mustangs are being drifted by a number of top class racing drivers, including Vaughn Gittin Jr, Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tuerck.
Okay, so there’s nothing wrong with drifting and all of those babies appear to be heavily modified. Jr’s own 2015 Mustang RTR is featured, along with an old school II, 1971 Mach 1 and a gorgeous 1967 fastback. Tuned or restomodded, every ‘Stang in the video is aided by independent rear suspension.
As the clip is full of smoky stuff and opposite lock drifts, there’s a little something that bothers me. 50 years of fun and “the fun continues” line that ends the clip are, on this instance, implying that the ‘Stang is a hoot to flick into the corners, which doesn’t really apply for variants of the breed inferior and previous to the 2014 model year Boss 302. Thankfully, the 2015 Ford Mustang saw the introduction of independent rear suspension, as well as an electronic line lock feature for hassle-free burnouts.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Mustangs, both old and newer models, but Ford should have used original cars for this clip, ‘Stangs with a basic live rear axle kept in check by leaf spring suspension. This type of setup is perfectly fine for burnouts and such, but not that good in terms of handling and drifting.
Nevertheless, details don't matter on this occasion, so let's enjoy the insanity of the vid below together.
