Tune It! Safe! Campaign Brought Six Cars to the Essen Motor Show 2014

For 10 years now, the German Ministry of Transportation has been running a campaign to encourage drivers to tune their car in a safe manner. Their motto couldn’t be clearer neither: Tune It! Safe!

Basically, what the officials are saying is that if you can’t beat them, join them. Therefore, the authorities decided to show them how it should be done and, since 2004, they’ve been creating a unique car each year in collaboration with various renowned German tuners.

This year, they brought six cars to the Essen Motor Show and we took photos of all of them.

The Mini E

Back in 2011, AC Schnitzer was called upon to create a special MINI model for this purpose. The weapon of choice was an electric MINI, also known as MINI E. Since this was a sole project, the specs are not exactly impressive.

The car will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds and has a total power of 204 HP and 220 Nm (162 ft-lb) of torque, not much but impressive none the less.

It also received a complete wrap from Foliatec, and a complete AC Schnitzer body kit made up of a new bonnet, new bumpers and new wheels.

The ACS4 2.8i

Another AC Schnitzer creation present on the scene was last year’s ACS4 2.8i. It’s a standard 428i modified by AC Schnitzer to make 294 HP and 420 Nm (309 ft-lb) of torque instead of the stock 245 HP and 250 Nm (258 ft-lb).

It also received the complete ACS works on the outside and the Police wrap from Foliatec along with a light bar and other distinctive elements

The Brabus Ultimate 112

This is a Smart fortwo cabrio modified by Brabus that has a 3-cylinder engine making 112 HP and 150 Nm (110 ft-lb) of torque and a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph). It will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds.

The aim here was to show that you can also be eco with your tuning. Therefore, the Brabus emits only 129 grams of CO2 per km, a stunning number for back then. Of course, this police car was designed for inner city usage.

The VW Scirocco

For the Scirocco unveiled back in 2009, the officials decided to go with a number of tuners, unlike before. They therefore created a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder TSI VW with 210 HP and 290 Nm (214 ft-lb) of torque thanks to an ABT Sportsline engine upgrade.

The 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint takes just 7.3 seconds and it will go up to a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). Other add-ons include Eibach springs, a Remus exhaust, Recaro seats and Antera wheels.
