Just like the pharaohs of old, present-day mortals still like to build flashy tombs for themselves. And when for some reason they don’t get to do that themselves, the people who loved them step in to set the dead guy’s story in stone.
For a couple of weeks now, a story about a dead truck pirate in Spain and the weird memorial meant to honor him has been making the rounds online. The particular part of Spain from where this originated is called Pintos Puente, the dead’s guy’s (incomplete) name is Antonio PC, and the memorial comprises a statue of him and one of the cars he used to drive.
So first things first: the guy. Antonio PC, allegedly known as El Tonto (The Fool), has been a very successful truck pirate in his home country, but also in neighboring France. That means he (also allegedly) used to chase trucks down highways and steal whatever they were carrying.
His business was so lucrative, some media reports, that the guy even opened a supermarket in his own town to sell the good he stole. In doing so, he became extremely popular with both the locals, but also with law enforcement, who arrested him over 60 times.
All went great until Antonio bit the dust last year.
At his passing, his family and friends decided to honor him properly, so they erected a statue of the man, overlooking his own grave. At the time, the statue was a media sensation because of all the details that went into it: the guy is even wearing an expensive Rolex made of bronze, and beside him sit a Gucci handbag, two smartphones, and a pack of Marlboros.
This year, to up the ante, the locals gifted the deceased with a replica of one of the cars he used during the heists.
Local Spanish media say the man drove an Audi Q5 in his raids, but what we have here seems to be more of an SQ7. That means either the Spanish media is reporting this wrong, or the guys who made the car replica really messed things up.
Either way, the sculpture looks hideous, and clear the sense of proportions really ruined the entire display. Then again, Antonio doesn't care.
