Dashcam footage of an accident that took place earlier this month in New Jersey is being shown to the public by the police as a means to warn of the dangerous and increasing trend of road rage altercations.
Keeping your cool behind the wheel and not doing anything drastic is essential for your and other drivers’ safety. The same goes for not taking matters into your own hands and letting competent authorities deal with whatever problems may arise.

You can see the video at the bottom of the page. It was released by the Mahwah Police Department, after the driver of another truck handed it over as evidence. It shows a gray SUV trying to brake-check another truck – the one that eventually ends up on its side, with its sweet cargo on the road.

The driver of the SUV later told police that he had noticed the driver of the truck was driving dangerously and erratically. He thought he might even cause an accident, so he took it upon himself to set him right.

So, he drove his SUV into the next lane and kept braking whenever the truck tried to change lanes and get behind. He also brake-checked the truck when it had moved behind his SUV, as the video shows.

That was enough to infuriate the truck driver and get him to speed up. After the SUV driver let the issue go and started to drive away, the truck driver lost control of his vehicle, which hit the median and then flipped over.

Mahwah’s chief of police James Batelli tells the New York Post both drivers were responsible for the accident, so both will have to answer for what they did. All things considered, this could have played out far worse.

“Miraculously, no other vehicles struck the tractor-trailer, which could have resulted in a major accident event,” Batelli explains. This way, only the truck driver was hurt.

“The 36-year-old truck driver, who was driving for Depew New York, was issued summonses for careless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to signal, police said,” the NY Post adds. “The 44-year-old SUV driver, a Montebello resident, was issued summonses for reckless driving, failure to maintain lanes, failure to signal and delaying traffic.”

Batelli says this incident is the latest in a long series, showing an increase in the dangerous trend of road rage altercations.
