Tourists should know better than to leave their cars unlocked when they’re in wooden / mountain areas – or in any other place they’re not familiar with, for that matter.
There are countless videos online showing bears breaking into cars to retrieve whatever food the owners forgot behind and causing serious damage to the inside of the vehicle, but one Florida couple hadn’t seen any. That’s the only possible explanation for leaving their car unlocked outside their cabin in Gatlinburg, East Tennessee, where they’re on vacation.

While inside, they heard a noise outside. They came out to the terrace to see the doors of their car open and the lights on. It wasn’t thieves, though: one momma bear and her 2 cubs had broken in, attracted by the smell of dog food inside. Owner Oliver Broome had forgotten an open bag of dog food under the seat.

In addition to eating all the dog food and drinking all the cans of Pellegrino they could find, the bears also thrashed the interior. As you can see in the video at the bottom of the page, the car is destroyed – so this makes for a very expensive lesson for these 2 Florida tourists. Or “Floridiots,” as wife Laura says on Facebook after their story went viral.

“This is why you don’t EVER leave your car unlocked in the Mountains even for a minute. A Momma Bear and her two cubs broke in to my car tonight and enjoyed the dog food and Pelligrino we didn’t realize was left under the back seat. Unfortunately, a few of us Florida folks learned how smart bears are the hard way,” she writes on social media.

She adds that the bears “are fine: enjoyed their snack and went off into the woods unharmed.”
