Some cops could be celebrating with some delicious doughnuts right now as Trapster, one of beter known community based app reporting on speed traps and police units en route, will shut down its services soon.
In a not a very informative tweet, Trapster casted the message to its followers, stating that it has decided to discontinue the app’s existence by the end of this year after the company evaluated ongoing investments and probably found out it’s not worthy...

“After evaluating our ongoing investments, we have decided to discontinue the Trapster service by the end of the year,” says Team Trapster. “It is hard to imagine saying goodbye after 7 years but we want to thank you for using Trapster and your loyalty to the Trapster community. Thank you!”

Why?

Mostly because the app became a bit unpopular among users, who migrated to Waze, a similar app that generated a big enough community that raised Google’s interest and bought it in a split second. Now the app comes with more features than ever and you can also set Arnold Schwarzenegger to alert you about trouble ahead.

For those new to the technology, Trapster and other apps alike are pretty much the equivalent of drivers headlight flashing others to warn about police speed traps or DUI checkpoints. You drive and if you spot one, you can land a mark on the map for others to see.

The app was launched by Pete Tenereillo in November 2007 and by 2009 it had about half a million users subscribed. The snowball grew bigger and as of October 2012, the company reported over 17 million users.

Still, despite the huge number, users in some regions complained about the app’s clunkiness, bogus reports or no information at all being available in their area.
