Ford also entered the contest with ECOnetic versions of the Fiesta Van and Focus, both of which have emissions lower than 100 g/km of carbon dioxide and have a mileage in excess of 70 mpg.
The event takes place ahead of the RAC Veteran Car Run and on the same route, but in reverse, the Future Car Challenge ending among the veteran cars exhibit in Regent Street.
The Ford Transit Connect Electric is a zero-emission, all-electric version of the light commercial vehicle. It will enter the market in Europe sometime during the next year.
Power storage is ensured by a lithium ion battery with a capacity of 28kWh and its delivery to the vehicle's wheels is done by a chassis-mounted 55kW electric traction induction motor. It's batteries last for up to 80 miles and the top speed is around 75 mph (120 km/h).
Charging of the Transit Connect Electric's battery pack is done through a standard power outlet. An onboard converter then charges the battery pack. Fully charging the batteries via a household 230 volt socket is done in under 10 hours.
The two ECOnetic cars are powered by optimized versions of the 1.6 litre Duratorq TDCi engine, producing 109 hp in the Focus and 95 hp in the Fiesta Van. They target emission and fuel efficiency concerned customers, as both have CO2 emissions under 100 g/km and get over 70 mpg of mileage.
Ford will introduce five all-electric and hybrid models in Europe by 2013 as part of it's global electrification strategy. Models include the 2011 Transit Connect Electric, the Mk3 Focus Electric in 2012, followed by hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new C-MAX and another hybrid model in 2013.
