Trakkadu AT Camper Van Shows That a VW Transporter Can Do Off-Roading

The new year is here, and now it’s time to get out of the house. Oh, but we’ve got to wait just a little bit longer. While we wait, why not drool over this awesome camper van?

Imagine for a moment that we are no longer on lockdown. What’s the first thing you’ll be doing? Probably looking to get out of the house. That's normal so far, so you and the family plan a trip out of town in your newly acquired Trakkadu camper from Trakka.

Oddly enough, your neighbors get a whiff of the plan and ask to tag along with their own hardware. You accept, but you also warn them that at one point, they just won’t be able to keep up with you and your route. To help them understand, you show them the video below and the gallery.

So what exactly are we looking at here? Well, first things first, the motor and chassis, as this is the base for any camper van. For the AT we are offered a Volkswagen T6.1 LWB with a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel engine. With a maximum power of 146 kW (198 PS/196 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, you won’t have to worry about pulling along all 1,388 pounds (630 kg) of possible payload. Oh, and it’s all-wheel drive, 4Motion to be more specific.

Now, enough about the motor, how much space and what perks can we expect to find inside? Well, the interior height allow for 6.5 ft (2 m) of headroom, and you’ll understand how shortly. The cargo bed, too, offers a large amount of space: 6.5ft x 3.9 ft (1.98 m x 1.2 m) is available for all the necessary survival tools needed during your time out in the wild.

As with most camper vans, it’s really the interior that poses the most interest. Sure, you want a capable engine and off-road capabilities, but the classic VW vans included some pretty tiny engines, and look at the icon those vehicles have become. Why? Because of the ability to transform the interior into a living space on wheels.

The very first feature I must point out is the pop-out roof. Imagine for a moment that the roof of this Transporter has been chopped, thrown out, and replaced by a roof system honed over 40 years of experience. It’s this roof system that allows for such massive headroom and is even able to house a solar panel system.

As for the amenities required to keep life moving while on the road, everything you need is available. The kitchen, for example, includes a diesel-fueled glass-ceramic cooktop and a stainless-steel sink and folding faucet. A fridge and freezer are also available in this seemingly small space.

The bedroom isn’t lacking in abilities either. This area acts both as a bedroom and dining room, with folding seats that transform into your very own bed suitable for two folks. Maybe, just maybe, you can sleep some hitchhiker you picked up on the floor in front of the bed, but that’s about all the bedding space available. Personally, I feel you don’t need any more than that.

On top of these necessities, the list of features and options available for this off-roading VW is quite long, so for the sake of time and argument, just click here and check everything out on your own. One thing definitely worth checking out is the off-road package and modifications this vehicle has forgone. All I can say is that you’re set for whatever side quest you embark upon.

Now, don’t freak out or anything, but this beaut starts out at $136,000. However, those are most likely Australian Dollars, currently meaning only about $105,000 in U.S. currency. That's not too bad considering what it can do for you and your lifestyle.
