Traffic Jams, a Perfect Lie to Justify Tardiness

When we're in our infancy, we're taught that lying is a bad thing. Later on, we are taught by life, coincidence or entourage, that small lies are often innocent and can do more good than bad. Regardless of our perception about lies, there's one thing we all have in common: nobody teaches us how to lie, that's something we do on our own.

That means that some of us would become great liars, while the others not so much. The others, the ones that haven't mastered this art, will always try and pick up the great lies from the good liars, hoping that what worked for one, might work for all. This is perhaps the reason why most of us humans are very limited when it comes to telling a lie and why, in similar conditions, we come up with the same stupid lie, regardless of our background, education and so on.

A long, long time ago, one brainiac kid decided to tell his teacher that his dog ate the homework. Obviously, the teacher believed him, as we keep on hearing this dumb invention our days as well. For grown-ups, a similar lie is the one used to justify late arrivals at home, at some events or wherever: traffic!

A study conducted in the UK found that if you hear someone blaming traffic for his or her tardiness, then it’s most likely a lie. 51 percent of those using this line are lying, whether they say that jams prevented them arriving in time or that their ride broke down or at least had an episode.

It's not clear how many people the study considered when coming up with these results, but look in the mirror and be honest: how many times did you blame traffic for being late?
