Track-Only McLaren 650S Sprint to Debut at Pebble Beach

McLaren is sure going to have its hands full this week at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In addition to global debuts of the P1 GTR Design Concept, and a trio of one-off examples of what McLaren Special Operations (MSO) can do, the British automaker just announced that it will reveal the 650S Sprint for the first time ever.

Designed with the sole purpose of tearing up tracks, the 650S Sprint has received numerous upgrades over the already impressive McLaren 650S for better racing performance. For starters, this begins with modifications made to the ProActive Chassis Control, active aerodynamics and Brake Steer system from the standard 650S. McLaren has also adjusted the suspension of the 650S Sprint giving it a lower ride height with new springs (and retuned the adaptive damping system accordingly) and equipped the car with a race-ready brake system. Few details were given on the exact changes McLaren made, but it did say that it would result in a “more engaging racing experience without losing any of the refinement and balance found in the road car.”

To help keep the stock 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 at proper temperatures, McLaren gave the 650S Sprint a larger front radiator borrowed from the GT3 racecar. As such, more cooling was required, so the 650S Sprint also gets the GT3-style hood ducts as well as front vents and rear fender inlets. Similar racecar-ready components include the 19-inch center locking wheels with Pirelli racing tires and an onboard air jack system to make tire changes a breeze.

On the inside, the McLaren 650S Sprint has been fitted with an FIA roll cage, carbon fiber HANS-approved racing seat, six-point racing harness and a fire extinguisher, but many non-essential components have been removed in the name of weight reduction such as the airbags, carpeting, center console and infotainment system, but the air conditioning system was retained for optimal comfort. Optional features for the car include the inclusion of a passenger seat with harness and a polycarbonate windshield to shave a few extra pounds.

Improving aerodynamics and complementing the styling of the 650S Coupe, the 650S Sprint can also be fitted with carbon fiber front splitter and rear wing. In terms of the paint scheme, the car that will be displayed at Pebble Beach will come in an orange-on-white scheme, which McLaren says is the reverse scheme of the 650S GT3 revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Since we all know that racing isn’t cheap, if you’re looking to get your hands on one of these track-prepped 650S Sprint coupes, be prepared to spend a pretty penny. Starting prices will be £198,000 ($332,364), and that obviously doesn’t include options.
