The Japanese automaker Toyota earned its world leader reputation in vehicle sales by offering best value and efficiency at a low cost.
And that reflects even in its chief executive’s concept of doing his job. President Akio Toyoda is the lowest-paid chief in the world’s biggest five automakers by sales top.
“Akio has been tested like no other CEO of Toyota in the last 30 years,” said Maryann Keller, principal at auto industry consulting firm Maryann Keller & Associates in Stamford, Connecticut. Compared to Toyoda, “the competition is overpaid.”
Ford’s chief Alan Mulally is the best paid in the top five, with $21 million (EUR16M) cashed last year, a huge amount compared to Mr. Toyoda’s $1.9 million (EUR1.45M). The list continues with VW’s chief executive Martin Winterkorn with $19 million (EUR14.5M), Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche with $8.15 (6.22M) and Dan Akerson of General Motors getting $11 million last year.
