Sales of the Citroen C1, shown above, and its two sister car, the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 are falling.
According to figures from JATA Dynamics quoted by Autonews Europe, state that the C1 and Aygo were down 12%, while their Peugeot sister was down a massive 22% in the first nine month of 2013.
Not surprisingly, the jointly owned factory in the Czech republic is cutting its output. "Currently we are expecting production at up to 200,000 this year," factory spokesman Radek Knava said. "The situation for the small-car segment is that volumes are decreasing."
This comes after 215,000 cars were made last year. Lack of demand and problems in the European economy are blamed by company officials, but of we thing there are other reasons for slow demand.
All three cars received a poor rating of only three stars from Euro NCAP, due to lack of sufficient structural reinforcement and safety systems.
The triplets are also very old cars, dating back to 2005, which means rivals like the Skoda Citigo are much more relevant. What the company officials aren't officially telling us is that replacements are on the way and could be ready as soon as 2014. We even have spyshots of the new Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo to prove prototypes are at an advanced stage of their development.
