The Yaris Hybrid-R is a showcase of ideas for the future of hybrid technology, combining the advanced technology of the compact production hatch with high-performance engineering derived from the TS030 Hybrid endurance racer.

The new Hybrid-R powertrain uses a 300 hp 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine combined with two powerful electric motors, each boasting the equivalent of 60 hp, which are mounted on each wheel at the back. Summing all up, this crazy Toyota Yaris will benefit from 420 hp.

Working as “boosters” during acceleration, the two electric motors at the back also have the job to perform as generators during braking and feed a super capacitor located under the seat. Also, there is a third 60 hp electric motor located between the engine and the 6-speed sequential gearbox that operates as a generator in two different conditions - during deceleration to recharge the super capacitor and during acceleration to directly supply power for the rear electric motors.

Apart from the racing exterior design, inside you will find two Recaro seats, Alcantara trimmed door panels and dashboard as well as an ideally located sequential shifter. Depending on situation, the Yaris Hybrid R can work in two modes - road and track.

In “Road” mode, the vehicle was engineered to suit day to day traffic, so the engine and electric system outputs will be reduced. The super capacitor will release the energy for a maximum of 10 seconds, while the total power of the electric motors will be limited to 40 hp. The vehicle can also operate on full electric mode for short distances and especially during parking jobs.

As expected, the “Track” mode will max out the hybrid powertrain, remaping the engine to develop 300 hp and 420 Nm, while the electric motors will be able to provide 120 hp for 5 seconds. At low speeds or in a curve, when the engine power exceeds the potential front wheel grip, the third electric motor can directly power the rear motors.

The two motors at the back will also make a huge difference while cornering, as they will be able to function independently, thus altering the distribution of torque between the wheels.
