Toyota will start a recall campaign in the United States of America to replace airbag control modules on certain 2003 to 2006 models. Some Lexus vehicles are also involved in the recall campaign.
All known owners of the affected vehicles that add up to 320,000 units will be notified by first class mail. The American branch of the Japanese company didn’t mention any accidents, injuries, or deaths involving the defective components from one of the affected vehicles.
The recall will include the 2003-2006 Toyota Land Cruiser, the 2004-2006 Toyota 4Runner, the 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra, along with the ’05-’06 Sequoia. Two Lexus models are also affected, the 2003-2006 LX 470 and the 2004-2006 GX 470.
The 320,000 vehicles that are targeted by this recall action are fitted with Curtain-Shield Airbags. The curtain-shield airbags deploy from the roof in the event of particular crashes, and only in specific conditions.
The recall campaign will involve the replacement of the airbag control modules. Apparently, they have been improperly programmed, and there is a risk that the curtain-shield airbag could deploy shortly after engine startup.
As the Japanese carmaker specified, the situation could only happen under some specific and limited conditions, and the problem could also activate the seatbelt pre-tensioners of the vehicle. Obviously, unexpected activation of airbags could be dangerous to the occupants.
Toyota and Lexus dealers will substitute the airbag control module on all affected cars without any cost to the owners.
The current recall campaign announced by Toyota Motor Sales USA does not have anything to do with the Takata recall. The callbacks issued to replace Takata airbags are separate from this action, as those target the airbag inflators, while the latter is focused on the airbag control modules.
The Japanese carmaker has not specified how it discovered the glitch. Usually, internal quality control tests reveal such issues even years after a car is launched. However, some recalls get triggered by customer complaints on Government tests.
