Driving a car appears to be a very complicated thing these days with so much traffic and pedestrians roaming around. Reason why cars are getting more complex and will handle more of the driver’s tasks to maintain a high level of safety. Such a system is Toyota’s new vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system which will be already on sale next year.
Yes, starting with 2015, certain Toyota models sold in Japan will inherit the automaker’s solution to solve congestion and safety issues in the future. The system won’t turn cars into self-driving machines, as that’s simply not what Toyota is aiming for, but will aid the driver with more information and keep him from doing costly mistakes.

Available as an option for the Toyota Safety Sense P package, the compatibility will use a dedicated ITS frequency of 760 MHz to establish communication with the road infrastructure as well as other cars in the traffic sharing the same system.

What’s it doing?

You know how ants do their job so efficiently without bumping into each other? That’s because they communicate between them using pheromones and that’s what the Toyota system will basically do - give cars a bit more “knowledge” about their surroundings.

For example, when you’ll be approaching an intersection and the light turns red, the car will know that thanks to a data link between it and the intersection itself. If you fail to notice and reduce speed, the system sounds the buzzer or can even apply the emergency brake. Starts to seem more like driving a freight train, right?

Emergency vehicles will pop up on the screen when they’re nearby so you’ll know the direction they’re coming from, stop and let them pass. And something similar will happen when you want to make a turn in an intersection, with the system warning of potential cars and pedestrians in your way.

Cruising on the highway will also be improved thanks to the vehicle-to-vehicle communication system that will perfectly maintain the distance between cars in all circumstances, avoiding the unnecessary accelerations or braking normal radar cruise control provides.
