Toyota Valve Springs Recall Fix: Between 7 and 22 Hours

Even though the title of “the latest carmaker to be hit by the recall malady” is shared by BMW and Mazda - with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigating a power steering failure issue that could affect 48,764 BMWs and 293,787 vehicles - it is Toyota who still manages to claim to the top of the recall news. Last week, the company announced that 270,000 Lexus and Toyota cars sold worldwide have faulty engines.

A list of vehicles including the Lexus GS350, GS450h, GS460, IS350, LS460, LS600h and LS600h L and the Toyota Crown that use 3.5 liter V6, 4.6 liter V8 and 5.0 liter V8 units are suspected for having defective valve springs. The recalled vehicles belong to model years 2006-2008, with the current line-up not being affected by this issue.

The valve springs , which are experiencing this condition due to variations during the manufacturing process, can break and lead to engine stalling, also potentially causing serious engine damage (for the complete explanation, check out this post).

This week, Toyota is debuting the U.S. recall of the models, with 138,000 vehicles being involved.

Now, the company’s UK arm is also joining the call back initiative, announcing that replacing the potentially faulty valve springs takes between seven and 22 hours for each vehicle, depending on the model. Lexus will offer a replacement vehicle for customers that are having their car serviced.

We apologise for any concern and inconvenience caused to our customers by this campaign,” said Lexus UK director Belinda Poole.
