Toyota UK Switches ON 13,000 Solar Panels

Selling cars that sip fuel doesn’t necessarily make you a green automaker if the factory where you build them is gulping energy and pollutes the environment. That’s why Toyota is slowly but surely turning to alternative energy to build cars and just today, it switched on a 13,000 solar panel array to help one of its plants go ecologic.

The array is located near Toyota’s UK engine production plant at Deeside in North Wales. It has been designed and installed by British Gas and can make up to 3,475,000 kW a year, translating into enough electricity to produce around 22,500 engines.

Adding to those numbers, the new array will save more than 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions per year, putting the company in the top of those using renewable energy.

“I am delighted to turn on this array today which marks another significant milestone in Toyota’s investment in Wales,” said Welsh minister of economy, science and transport Edwina Hart AM at the opening ceremony. “Toyota is a highly valued Welsh Government anchor company working in one of our key sectors and makes a significant contribution to the Welsh economy and the business community in Wales.”

The plant at Deeside is not the first one in the country to use solar panels. Back in 2011, Toyota’s Burnaston factory in Derbyshire did the first step by installing one of Britain’s largest solar arrays.
