Toyota Trademarked 'Prius Prime' Name Before the S-FR Label

As much as we'd like the 'Prime' part to have a small connection with the leader going by the name of Optimus Prime in Transformers, this isn't the case but a Toyota Prius Prime sure is something that catches our attention.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we found out Toyota filed a trademark that looked like a name for a future model that could replace the adored Supra.

Yes, it was a bit confusing, especially since Toyota's GT86 sportscar is sold as the Scion FR-S but hear this out: there's a Prius Prime trademark filed by Toyota on USPTO's (United States Patent and Trademark Office) website.

The filing was forwarded on March 26, and it refers to 'automobiles and structural parts thereof'. Moreover, its current status is 'live' and was assigned the 86577082 serial number. Now, what should we believe and say about this, without blowing up the rumor mill?

First of all, we can't help but think about a fifth addition to the Prius range. Secondly, Toyota might look to add a new moniker for the upcoming next-gen Prius Plug-In, or we could be looking a new top-of-the-shelf trim name, as Kaizen Factor suggests.

What bothers us most is that the new Prius will show up a few months from now, and you have to admit that the timing can fuel a lot of intrigues. Also, we don't believe in coincidences. Therefore, we incline to think that Toyota has been secretly cooking up something, but we're not losing our head either since carmakers are known for trademarking names that will never be used.
