Toyota to Work at Half Capacity in May

Slowly, the pieces of the puzzle that has become the Japanese automotive industry are coming together, but only to give life to a troubling picture. Judging by how things look even today, over a month since the twin disaster that has struck Japan on March 11, the industry will continue to suffer from parts shortages and production freezes for months to come.

Toyota, the car maker that has taken the biggest hit of them all, said on Friday that, after evaluating the situation, it has decided that, as soon as its Japanese workers get back from their annual spring holiday on May 10, production will be resumed, but only at half capacity.

The situation is expected to last until June 3. After that date, there's no telling what will be, Toyota only saying, as it has done several times until now, that it will “decide on production after this period after assessing the situation of its suppliers and other related companies.”

Slowly, the troubles Toyota is experiencing in Japan has expanded well beyond the natural borders of the islands. Production facilities in the US have been queued for closure on April 15, 18, 21 (except for the Georgetown plant), 22, and 25.

In Europe, the part shortages has determined Toyota to both close facilities and take advantage of the scheduled breaks to limit the consequences of the Japanese parts shortage. Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT), Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF), Toyota Motor Industries Poland (TMIP) and TMUK Engine Plant Wale are affected by the moves.
