Toyota wants to bring manufacturing time and cost down by 30 percent in order to provide customers more efficient and less expensive cars. This means that the Japanese automaker will have to ditch some customized components for different vehicles, so that it will use standard ones.
One example will be reducing the number of knee airbag models from 50 to just 10 and make them standard on all their vehicles. This action will probably win contracts with international component makers like Robert Bosch GmbH, TRW Automotive Holdings Corp and Johnson Controls Inc.
“This should mean more opportunities for global mega-suppliers” with worldwide capacity and design expertise, said Tokyo Credit Suisse analyst Masahiro Akita.
“From now on, Toyota will seek the compatibility of certain parts it uses with standard parts used by many automakers globally,” the company said in a statement.
