Toyota to Deploy Prius Plug-In in San Francisco

Japanese manufacturer Toyota announced yesterday a new partnership with the city of San Francisco which will allow the carmaker to deploy several of its Prius plug-in hybrid vehicles for testing in the city.

The Priuses will be part of the San Francisco city fleet and will be used as show-and-tell tools, highlighting the benefits of electric transportation and trying to accommodate the public with this new way of motoring.

“Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are the future of the automotive industry and an economic engine for job growth,"
said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid is powered by a 1.8l 97 bhp regular engine, paired with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The engine develops by itself 97 bhp, while the electric motor adds an extra 79 bhp.

The vehicle can be recharged from a standard 110 volt outlet or a Level 2 charger. The city of San Francisco will be using three Coulomb EV charging stations already installed to charge their vehicles.

The PHEV can travel some 12.5 miles (20km) in electric mode, six miles more than our everyday Prius. The increased electric mileage can reduce harmful emissions to as little as 609g/km.

"More than half of the greenhouse gases produced in California come from transportation, and replacing gasoline vehicles with electric vehicles will help transform California's economy and our environment for the better," the mayor added.

"I am proud that San Francisco will continue to help pioneer and advance the emerging electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid market with this new partnership with Toyota."
