This year’s Frankfurt Motor Show will be very exciting for us Toyota enthusiasts, as the Japanese automaker promised to unveiled an exciting concept car that will feature technology fitted to the TS030 Hybrid race car we’ve already seen in action at Le Mans in late June.
Toyota announced this Hybrid-R concept about a week ago and we thought it was pretty safe to assume we’ll be seeing the highly-anticipated Supra replacement in concept car form. Well, it turns out Toyota has something even more interesting up its sleeve.
According to a brief press statement released today, the Hybrid-R concept is actually “based on a current Toyota production model”. So what will it be? Since the powertrain delivers “a maximum power output of more than 400 BHP”, we think that any other model except the GT 86 is out of question. Given its sporty profile, a hybrid GT 86 could become an interesting hybrid race car for the road.
Our second guess is that Toyota could showcase this race-inspired powertrain on a Lexus architecture, most probably the one used for the new 2014 IS. We’ll just have to wait for more details to surface.
“Hybrid-R is based on a current Toyota production model and is equipped with a powertrain that features similar technology to that used by Toyota Racing’s TS030 Hybrid race car in the FIA World Endurance Championship. It combines a high-power internal combustion engine with electric motors to achieve a maximum power output of more than 400bhp (298kW). A dual mode control allows the car’s performance to be tailored to suit either road or racetrack,” Toyota said in its press release.
