Toyota Tacoma Owner Turns His Car into a Handmade RV

A Reddit user has recently unveiled his vision of what a pickup designed for weekend getaways should look like. The man simply built an Ikea, space-efficient bedroom in his truck-bed using plywood and skateboard blades.

His little project started with measures and sketches, piece by piece. The frame of the drawer system was built with ball bearings for the drawer slides. It’s bolted together with angle iron for easy removal and the sliding system was created by using old skateboard bearings. Not only were they free, but also quite efficient as they are able to carry a lot of weight.

There’s a top sheet covering the frame and the drawer on whose top a mattress was installed, thus using the space as a bed. On the sides of the drawer the Toyota owner left enough room so that he could install an extra battery that will power a stereo system and some cleverly placed LEDs, he put on the rear window.

The drawer itself is divided in compartments so that the user can store separate stuff, like cookware, climbing equipment, sleeping bags or camping gear. The custom built Toyota also has another panel that can cover the drawer while it’s open to use it as a picnic table. The driver even installed a switch in the front dash, to control the speakers in the back.

According to the car’s owner it took about a month of hard work to get the job done, but we’re pretty sure it’s a matter of hours for auto makers, say they would consider using it as a model. Who knows, maybe future Toyota trucks could use the same system to turn the car into a truly recreational vehicle.
