Toyota Tacoma Outsells Chevrolet Colorado in June

Toyota US higher-ups are now patting their backs thanks to a thoroughly great sales month for the Tacoma. Compared to main competitor 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma outsold GM’s workhorse by a whopping 2.5 to 1. It’s an unbelievable result in a mid-size truck segment limited by the chicken tax and too-few choices.

Those choices are Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and aging Nissan Frontier. Now try to get your head around a chicken tax-free mid-size pickup truck segment - the choices list would extended with the Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Amarok, and Mitsubishi Triton. But that is fantasy, and this is a sales success story, so let’s get our feet back on the ground. At least for now.

In the month of June 2015, Toyota North America managed to move 15,959 units of the Tacoma, which is less when we compare the figure with the 17,520 trucks sold in May. The Chevrolet Colorado, on the other hand, sold 6,558 units in June, which is less than the 8,881 pickup trucks sold in May.

The worst markers are the two remaining nameplates - while the Nissan Frontier managed to move a steady 4,437 units (a quarter down from the sales volume in May), the GMC Canyon made ends meet by selling a mere 2,532 examples in June. This clearly shows that the Colorado is more demanded than the Canyon.

Analyzing the mid-size pickup truck market will get just a tad more important when the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel will arrive with a plus-30 mpg rating from a 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel. In contrast, the chief engineer of the Toyota Tacoma made it clear that “we [Toyota] will not be offering a diesel engine.”
