The 2020 Supra is definitely a standalone and not a nostalgia product, which is strange considering Toyota has the most iconic classic Japanese cars. And probably the oldest one people can remember is the 2000GT.
Everybody sees Toyotas as reliable, good cars that get the job done without fuss. But the 2000GT was a James Bond car, so people woke up to the idea that they could also stir the emotions with good design. Nowadays, these rare cars are worth over a million dollars, and you can see why.

Even for its era, the GT was quite forward-thinking, with four disk brakes and three two-barrel carburetors. But it's the Jaguar-like curves and those headlights that people most remember, which also influenced the look of this rendering.

Artist flathat3d calls this the Supra A9000 for obvious reasons, based on the A90 codename of the 2020 sports coupe. The existing bodywork of the production Supra has been re-shaped and streamlined. These changes are most impactful at the front, where we the normal headlights have vanished under the bodywork, mirroring the pop-up design of the original. Everybody loves pop-up lights, but don't they have to be round?

Another set of round projectors has appeared, flanking a much smaller grille, with the overall design somehow reminding us of the Nissan Leaf. Also, disk wheels painted black now sit almost flush with the body, which is a look you might see on a Bonneville salt flats racer.

Around the rear, most of the original is preserved. But we do have Ferrari-like taillights and a set of dual exhausts in the middle, with trumpet-shaped tips that again remind us of a Jaguar model. The company is unlikely to make a retro car because it means different things to people around the world. Japan has tiny Corollas hatchbacks, America didn't see the early cars from the 60s and Europe just doesn't care that much.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
