Toyota Supra GR Also Makes More Power Than Claimed in Europe 1 photo

Ever wondered how the Toyota Supra is faster than a BMW M2, even though it has less power? Well, it turns out Toyota wasn't being honest with the output numbers.
This video from the UK's popular YouTube channel Car Throttle directly targets the European version of the 2020 Supra. What's the difference? Well, it's somehow supposed to have a lot less power than the American model at 335-hp (American and 369 lb-ft, which is 340 PS and 500 Nm over in Europe.

Those numbers might make owners feel short-changed compared to what its sister car, the BMW Z4, offers. However, a dyno test shows 376-hp and 410 lb-ft, which is 381 PS and 556 Nm of torque. Obviously, every car is going to be different, but the difference is about 10%. Explain yourself Toyota!

The dyno man says he's tested over a hundred M140i models, which also have a 3-liter BMW turbo engine, and they also produce more than advertised, but not this much. With a remap, the Supra can make 450 horsepower, he says.

Tuning is obviously going to be important with a car like this, and Car Throttle points out how Toyota deliberately left room for extra vents to be opened and new suspension installed. This is, of course, the upcoming GRMN track version we are talking about.

It is quite fast already, but the driving emotion just isn't there. We've recently talked about how the steering rack and manual gearbox in the Toyota GT 86 make it more engaging. Of course, people don't buy enough of those, so Toyota is right in chucking an automatic.

Super-fun or not, we still think it's going to do well, considering it looks so bold, and there are many tuners specializing in the BMW inline-6 that can work their magic. Between this, the M2 Competition and Alpine A110, we feel spoiled for sport car choice.
