The Legend Returns. That’s how Toyota decided to announce that the Supra is coming back into focus, with the reveal set for March 6th at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The thing is, the show car features a mammoth rear wing while the production Supra has an integrated decklid spoiler.
Given these circumstances, what does Toyota actually plan to unveil at Geneva? Two things need to be highlighted: “a modern racing concept” that signals the automaker’s “commitment to bring back to market its most iconic sports car.” It’s a Supra, yes, but the modern racing concept part is... well, unexpected.
BMW, by comparison, showcased the G29 Z4 with the help of a drop-dead gorgeous concept that doesn’t have anything to do with the world of motorsport. As for the all-new Supra, which is codenamed J29 and which borrows most of its underpinnings from the Bavarian sports car, the newcomer has a lot to live up to considering the pedigree of its foregoers.
If you look closely at the design of the rear wing, it comes to you in an instant: inspired by the glorious A80 Supra, definitely. The double-bubble roof, however, is something new, something inspired by Zagato-bodied Aston Martin models of old. These being said, what’s to be expected from the oily bits?
From the March issue of Best Car magazine, we’ve learned that the name of the game is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 of BMW origin, packing 340 metric horsepower and 450 Nm (332 pound-feet) of torque. Mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic, the B58 engine is joined by a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder mill with 195 and 250 horsepower, respectively.
Curb weight? 1,496 kilograms (3,298 pounds), which isn’t Mazda MX-5 light, but light enough for what the J29 Supra wants to be. The 4.38-meter long sports car is equipped as standard with 17-inch tires, 225/50 at the front and 255/45 at the rear axle.
