Toyota Starts Highlander Production in China

Toyota has just announced it will begin the production of the Highlander in China, after it officially displayed the car for the first time in the country at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. The Highlander will be manufactured in China by GAC Toyota Motor Company, also known as GTMC, a production and sales joint venture formed between Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Guangzhou Automobile Group.

“For a long time now we have positioned China as an important market and have been expanding our operations here with the tremendous support of everyone from the national and local governments,” said Takeshi Uchiyamada, TMC executive vice-president.

Toyota plans to sell a total of 20,000 Highlander units in 2009, with the new model already on sale since May 25. To refresh you memory, the Highlander is the third model produced by the Japanese manufacturer in China, after Camry - May 2006 - and Yaris - May 2008.

“TMC is looking forward to continuing to work with our business partner Guangzhou Automobile in strengthening GTMC’s foothold in the Chinese market and steadfastly increasing its operations, thereby enabling GTMC to provide even more products and services that will be welcomed by consumers in China.”

China has slowly become a large market for Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer who was initially more concentrated on the North American region. However, due to the collapsing sales there, but also thanks to the Chinese appetite for new cars. Pretty much boosted by the government's incentives and scrapping bonuses, the country is becoming one of the most important markets for many automakers around the world, no matter if we're talking about those based in Europe, Japan or North America.
