Rumors about a Toyota Supra revival never stop to surface, making us dream at another Japanese street legend. And unlike the earlier speculation, this piece of information appears to come straight from the automaker.
Speaking with Autoblog, a “few very well-placed members of the Toyota team” told that the Japanese automaker is ready to take everyone by surprise with a new Toyota Supra concept car that will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, previewing again a production version of a next generation Supra sportscar.
Toyota made a similar attempt back in 2007, with the FT-HS concept that you can see in the picture above, but then the economy plummeted and many automakers had to ditch non-essential product plans, with the Supra included among them.
The last generation Toyota Supra (Mark IV) entered production in 1993, being discontinued in the summer of 2002. In Japan it was offered with two engine choices – a naturally aspirated 3-liter 2JZ inline-six engine making 220 hp and a twin turbo version developing 276 hp. The export model received some engine upgrades allowing the sportscar to boast 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque.
The FT-HS concept which debuted at the 2007 North American International Auto Show was hinting at a next generation Toyota Supra that was supposed to be motivated by a 3.5-liter V6 hybrid system generating over 400 hp.
Toyota refused to comment more about the new concept, so we’ll just have to wait about a month to see what’s going on.
