Besides introducing the special edition Dakar Hilux, Toyota Motorsport South Africa has recently announced its line-up for the 2014 Dakar Rally.
Dakar Rally champions Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz will return for the 2014 season but this time they will be joined by another team, formed by Toyota racers Leeroy Poulter (driver) and Rob Howie (navigator) in another Hilux pickup truck.
Both vehicles will also be upgraded to handle the sand dunes better and their construction has already begun at Toyota Motorsport’s Barbecue Downs workshop near Kyalami.
“The rules require that you use a production engine from the manufacturer’s stable and while the 5-litre, normally aspirated V8 in our racing Hilux has done a great, trouble-free job to date, we are looking at ways we can be more competitive in terms of outright speed with our main rivals and their turbo-charged cars,” said team principal Glyn Hall.
The team will return to the Namib Desert near Walvis Bay at the beginning of August to prepare for the third Dakar Rally.
