Toyota Recalls Models Over Airbag Sensor

Japanese automaker Toyota reports that it’s recalling two models in its range, the RAV4 and the Highlander.

214,000 RAV4 units, 94,000 Highlander units and Highlander HV models will be recalled for side curtain airbag issues. The models in case are from 2007 and 2008 and will need a new Curtain Shield Airbag Sensor Assembly.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. announced that it will conduct a voluntary safety recall for the 2008 RAV4, 2008 Highlander and Highlander HV models sold in the US.

The roll sensing curtain shield airbag system of the vehicles in case features two sensors right in the airbag sensor assembly that were designed to detect the vehicle’s roll angle. If any of these sensors suffers malfunctions, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended in case of a roll-over of the vehicle, although the airbag remaining available in the event of a side collision.

After the initial airbag system check, if both sensors disfunction simultaneously, as a consequence to this, the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could be inadvertently activated.

Fortunately, no other vehicles face this problem as the problem concerns just the RAV4 and Highlander models which have been sold on the North American market. The vehicles sold on other markets do not feature this sensor, thus they don’t face this problem.

Owners will receive an interim notification letter briefing them about the certain recall by first class mail in May this year. This information will also be posted by the Japanese automaker on their official website. Furthermore, Toyota dealerships will replace the roll sensing sensor with a new one free of charge to the customer.
