Toyota Recalled, Industry Changed

2010 will go down in history as the year when more than one car maker conducted at least a major recall. With Toyota leading the pack of manufacturers asking for their cars to be brought back for repairs, the automotive industry in the US saw more cars driving towards dealerships this year than away from them.

If you add the numbers, you'll see that Toyota conducted this year no less than 18 recalls, with the number of vehicles recalled jumping passed the 7 million vehicles, out of a total of 20 million. By far, this is the biggest number of cars recalled this year by a single manufacturer, but that is not how Toyota sees things.

"Some of Toyota's biggest competitors have had twice as many recalls as we have over the past five years," Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons was quoted as saying by DetNews. "Toyota has had the lowest number of recalls of any major manufacturer over the past 10 years."

Even so, the huge Toyota scandal from the beginning of the year has prompted government authorities into changing, adding and toughening the rules in the field of car safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has now become a more active and faster than before organization and modified requirements for the number of complaints required for it to launch investigations into suspected faults.

"The Toyota recalls cast a much brighter spotlight on this process," Edmunds analyst Panee Segal told the source. "It will be interesting to see if the trend continues into the future when recalls aren't earning front page headlines."
