Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. announced it's calling back an estimated 20,000 vehicles for a minor error. The Japanese automaker informs these cars have been fitted with TRD wheels or Toyota-recommended Light Truck (LT) tires.
As it happens, the manufacturer's U.S. arm believes that the previously mentioned type of tires might have an overlay label on the Tire and Loading Information label with the incorrect cold tire pressure inflation value for the spare wheel.
If these TRD and Light Truck (LT) tires and/or wheels were installed on a car prior to its first retail sale with the incorrect label, then the vehicle fails to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims and Motor Home/Recreation Vehicle Trailer Load Carrying Capacity Information."
An incorrectly inflated tire doesn't appear to pose a safety threat, but improper tire pressure affects the handling of the vehicle and increases the possibility of the tire to separate from the rim when cornering aggressively (as in drifting). After an internal investigation, Toyota assessed that those affected cars are 2008 to 2014 model year FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles.
Toyota will either mail owners of involved vehicles or provide dealers with correct tire placard labels, with the recall expected to begin later this month. Owners can also reach Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
