Toyota Chairman Takeshi Uchiyama, also known as the Prius’ father, has strongly reaffirmed the company's commitment for developing and introducing a hydrogen-powered vehicle in the US.
As far as their technological researches have gone, Mr. Takeshi believes that the automaker can release a production hydrogen-powered vehicle based on the FCV-R concept in 2015. The car will cost about USD50,000 and the government may offer subsidies to possible customers in order to make it more attractive and accessible.
Fuel cell cars are almost similar to battery electric ones, except that they produce their own electricity from hydrogen instead of storing it heavy batteries and the only thing that comes out of the “tailpipe” is water.
The technology of safely storing and using hydrogen fuel is currently being tested and the only thing setting Toyota from its goal is the lack of a full scale hydrogen fuel infrastructure.
Looking like a space age Prius, the FCV-R concept measures 4,745 mm in length, 1,510 mm in height and 1,790 wide, offering enough room for up to six passengers, each sitting on their own individual-adjusting seat. Based on the JC08 test cycle, the FCV-R can do 700 km (435 miles) on a single tank of hydrogen.
